Sexualisation - its consequences
Society’s obsession with sex and sexual promiscuity has caused:
- Huge numbers of sexually transmitted diseases
- Rising addiction to pornography
- Lowering of moral standards
- Marital and relationship breakdown
- An endless quest for ‘perfection’ in the bedroom
- Feelings of guilt and/or inadequacy if one doesn’t give/receive sex, especially if in a relationship
- Feelings that sex is necessary and/or expected, and anything other than wanting sex is unnatural and abnormal
- Confusion between sex, lust and love – all entirely different things but often portrayed as one and the same
- Isolation and/or stigmatisation of those who don’t conform to the sexual ideal as typified in the mainstream media
- Pressure among youngsters to lose their virginity, contributing to huge numbers of STIs and teenage pregnancies (the UK has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies and STIs in Western Europe!)
- An over-emphasis on physical beauty at the expense of inner beauty
